Review of Psychological Therapies Team – PIMH written by a patient
23rd April 2017

I have total trust in Paula Fitzsimon, but the system is too slow. I've been offered suicide hotlines.. and yet I'm still waiting to hear from both Horizons and the Intermediary Medical Team to support me. My work is getting twitchy about the length of time I've been off.. and I've still not actually received any practical help. It makes me feel like giving up.

Review of General - Pre op written by a patient
28th March 2017

Can't speak highly enough of the team I came into contact with during my pre operative assessment. I would like to thank Elaine, Dr Monks, Caroline, Heather and Denise for the kindness, empathy and professionalism shown to me and my wife during our visit.

Arrived at 0925 for a 0930 appointment with Mr Shetty clinic eventually got called at 1015 to be informed Mr Shetty is not in and I saw another doctor who examined me and decided I need a scan, which another appointment would be sent in the post. Why could this not be organised there and then to save me having to take more time off work, probably to sit in the waiting room for another 3/4 hour only to be told they will have to operate. I feel there could be more organisation where appointments are concerned as there seemed to be quite a few people who had to wait for a long time. Also the new system where you are given a number is very impersonal and makes you feel as if your in Argos waiting to collect your purchase. Not a good decision in my opinion.

Review of Oncology written by a patient
14th March 2017

My partner contacted Oncology Dept in the morning to ask if she could re-arrange the collection of my treatment (tablets) to coincide with an MRI scan I needed to attend. She spoke to the Sister (Diane) who was quite ignorant on the phone, not giving her name (until directly requested by my partner), nor advising that I would need to have some bloods done PRIOR to attending! She did however, confirm a different/more acceptable appointment time. I attended my MRI scan and then went to collect my tablets - to be informed that the Oncology Dept had contacted Bispham Hospice (twice) asking where I was, as I had missed my scheduled appointment; also, I needed to have bloods taken; therefore, I would be waiting at least 1 hour whilst they were processed, etc! This totally defeated the purpose of my partners' telephone call to the Dept early in the day. As if we had known, I could have had my bloods taken before attending the MRI scan - therefore limiting my time in the hospital. Over an hour later, I was then informed that my tablets had NOT been dispensed by the pharmacy and I had to wait. I was in the Oncology Dept for 2.5 hours in total, when I should have been there for a 15 minute appointment! I have limited life expectancy and do not wish for this farce to be repeated either to myself or any other patient....as we all have better places we would rather be! ***Suggestions for improvement: - (1)There was obviously a significant breakdown in communication, which I feel needs to be urgently addressed! My partner mentioned that I had last had bloods taken last Wednesday, at no stage did Diane inform her that that was unacceptable and further bloods would be required....this is BASIC information and as such I would expect a person, not least, in the position of 'Sister' to inform a patient/ relative of the same?; (2) Why had no-one checked that the treatment was on their Dept ready for collection? Surely, as routine, one of the first jobs every morning needs to be that ALL meds that are to be collected that day are available and ready for collection?

The specialist I saw at BVH was excellent. He talked to me as a human in a very friendly manner and fully explained why I had been referred, what the options were and what would happen next. I can only say that I was very impressed by all aspects of his service to me. The nursing staff that provided part of the service too were just as good.

I was very impressed by the staff and facilities at Victoria Hospital. In particular the cardiac nurses were wonderful and did a great deal to relieve my anxiety. Support staff were friendly and helpful. The anaesthetist was very pleasant and re-assuring and post op care was first rate. Visiting was flexible and staff had empathy with how patients and relatives felt, giving clear and appropriate information. Telephone contact with the ward was excellent which reduced the worries of the family. The ambience of the hospital entrance was calming and the shops, cafe etc, allowed visitors to buy both treats and necessities! Not least, parking is fantastic and this reduces stress. Overall I had a very good experience!

I can't thank the staff on ward 19 enough for their patience with me. I was bought in with suspected problem with my appendix just recently and was so scared away from my family in Australia fearful I was going to be operated on. The nightshift workers were fantastic! Hannah the Dr was so lovely and patient with me and my phobia of blood tests, taking my first blood test in over 22 years even if it was from my hand. A big thank you as well to Jodie, Linn and the other girls who made me stickers and had a laugh with me. It's so very important to have such amazing people working in this industry and I can't thank these guys enough. The day shift workers were great to, although it seemed like more was going on. A big thank you guys and merry christmas!
